College Counseling

The college application process has changed in considerable ways in recent years.  With more and more high school graduates attending college, the process of gaining admission has become increasingly competitive.  Additionally, there are hundreds of schools that offer excellent educational opportunities, making it difficult to navigate the search process.

Many families share that this is a highly stressful experience.  I believe that it need not be so stressful, but rather, that the college selection process presents an opportunity for your child to begin to clearly identify and articulate who s/he is and what s/he needs and wants from college.

To that end, my goal is to personalize the process by truly getting to know children as individuals and by working closely with families to help them choose the fit that’s best for them.

I offer my services only in areas in which I can excel.  If I do not offer a service you are interested in, please let me know, and I will happily provide you with a reference.  Services include but are not limited to:

  • High School Course Selection
  • College Matching
  • Paying for College
  • Strategic Planning
  • Mock Interview
  • Activities Résumé Editing
  • Essay Brainstorming
  • Essay Editing
  • Application Review
  • Academic/Testing Advice
  • School Visits (escort students when parents are unavailable and/or escort students and parents to provide a visit  through the eyes of an experienced counselor

Essay Writing & Instruction

Although I recognize that standardized tests are required for college admissions, colleges know that writing is a much stronger predictor of students’ success in college.

Increasingly, colleges are putting more weight on personal statements when making admissions decisions.  My approach to teaching writing enriches a student’s school experience by bridging the gaps in the school curriculum. I utilize actual writing assignments that are given in the student’s various classes as the basis for building overall writing skills, thereby fostering an awareness of “writing across the disciplines” and promoting a sense of achievement as students learn to recognize their individual strengths and to communicate them coherently.

This approach is consistent with the expectations of the nation’s best colleges and universities, many of which have implemented rigorous writing programs that students must take in their first year.

Although I believe it is best to provide writing instruction that fully prepares students for their baccalaureate careers, I am also able to provide more directed instruction so that they produce their best possible writing sample for their college applications.
