Essay Writing & Instruction
Although I recognize that standardized tests are required for college admissions, colleges know that writing is a much stronger predictor of students’ success in college.
Increasingly, colleges are putting more weight on personal statements when making admissions decisions. My approach to teaching writing enriches a student’s school experience by bridging the gaps in the school curriculum. I utilize actual writing assignments that are given in the student’s various classes as the basis for building overall writing skills, thereby fostering an awareness of “writing across the disciplines” and promoting a sense of achievement as students learn to recognize their individual strengths and to communicate them coherently.
This approach is consistent with the expectations of the nation’s best colleges and universities, many of which have implemented rigorous writing programs that students must take in their first year.
Although I believe it is best to provide writing instruction that fully prepares students for their baccalaureate careers, I am also able to provide more directed instruction so that they produce their best possible writing sample for their college applications.
